June is a long way away from February but it gives me time to be excited and looking forward to lots of fun with current friends & new friends. The Museum of Visual Materials, Ladies Craft Night on June 6th, 2012 will be about a bit of art card history, lots of recycling creative fun & introduction to a fabulous contest for Sioux Falls Art Trading Cards hosted by the MoVM with a fabulous prize to be awarded!!! You’re wondering what the prize is? :) A quote from the Facebook event:

“Plus, we’ll be introducing, “Celebration: A Look at the Sioux Falls Art Scene” art trading card spectacular and contest. The winner (at the end of August) will be awarded a two month show at the museum, with a reception in their honor.”

This is an exciting opportunity for a local Artist!!!

The creation of Art Trading Cards [or it's for sale twin: ACEO: Art Card Editions & Originals] is a joyous occasion for me.

I’ve been participating in an online ATC swap hosted by Grumbacher on Facebook since they started them last summer (2011) [Grumbacher Facebook ATC Swap Notes].

“I Could Raise & Fly” was my submission for their 1st Swap. I have some fabulously gorgeous cards in my collection by wonderful artists that I would never have discovered otherwise.

Their current theme is Fairy Tale :) … I painted my tree for it at the MOVM drawing studio yesterday … lol … big surprise it is a tree huh ;P

Plus, I also won a lovely Limited Edition Print on Facebook by a terrific Artist, Nikki Jacquin (nee: Sacchetti), Portraits of Childhood by Nikki Jacquin because I discovered her art thru the Grumbacher ATC Swap :)

A bit of history here from Wikipedia.

Artist trading cards (or ATCs) are miniature works of art about the same size as modern baseball cards, 2.5 x 3.5 inches (63 mm X 89 mm), small enough to fit inside standard card-collector pockets, sleeves or sheets. The ATC movement developed out of the mail art movement and has its origins in Switzerland. Cards are produced in various media, including dry media (pencils, pens, markers, etc.), wet media (watercolor, acrylic paints, etc.), paper media (in the form of collage, papercuts, found objects, etc.) or even metals or cloth. The cards are usually traded or exchanged. When sold, they are usually referred to as art card editions and originals (ACEOs).

I buy pre-sized commercial cards [Strathmore Artist Trading Cards] at Hobby Lobby or Michaels or online from various art supply stores – disclosure: I am not associated with the companies nor am I paid to recommend them. I want to start creating fun projects using them right away not play with rulers & scissors trying to get the correct sizes for background support – I would rather spend my time with paint, pencils, pens, glue & adornments :) BUT … many ppl LOVE to do that part too as part of their creative process.

This is what I wrote on the wall of the Facebook event:

ATC [Artist Trading Cards] are sooo much fun to make and to trade.

The only “rules” are that they are baseball size: 2.5″x 3.5″. You do NOT have to be an “artist” to make and trade or collect these :)

They are perfect for artists, crafters, recyclers and everyone who enjoys making things in a group or alone. Some companies sell pre-made sized cards for immediate use with no measuring & cutting for people like me that want to get right to the drawing, gluing and sewing … or you can make your own background support out of … ??? … [cardboard, magazine covers, craft or floral foam, fabric ...] as part of the creation enjoyment.

Some Artists do sell ACEO [Art Card Editions & Originals] for collectors who are interested in expanding their art card collections … *most* of those I have seen for sale are priced in the neighborhood of $5-25 dollars.

And if you are an artist wanting a solo show … winning this contest would be an absolutely glorious prize!!!! Hope I see you there!!! Invite your friends too please :)
