I joined the Museum of Visual Materials Drawing Open Studio Group here in Sioux Falls, SD.

I enjoy sketching and talking with everyone who arrives and there are lots of objects to try to capture with pencil on paper – though my favorite is still the tree I can see through a window :) … I LOVE trees!!! Focusing on improving my sketching / drawing skills and abilities is working though slowly since I am still vision impaired and uncoordinated … but my ability to notice details has improved tremendously!!!

I joined the Prairie Pallette Drawing / Painting Group here in Sioux Falls, SD. It was being held at the Museum of Visual Materials but moved to another location in December 2011.

I am vision-impaired and very uncoordinated so my drawing abilities are never expected to grow into true illustration detailed skill (by me) but I love sketching & doodling and it is a fun activity to do with a group of nice people who are interested in the same kinds of things I am interested in. And anything we practice, we do get better at – I want to sketch pine trees as well as palm trees … now is a perfect time to start working on that skill and eventually I will be able to do them consistently well :) Buildings on the other hand require a computer and graphics software for me :)

You can see my sketches of the day on my Facebook page.

I entered one digital painting in the Avera McKennan Art of Healing Juried Show and was accepted.

The show was on the campus of Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. The show was viewed in the Prairie Center, on the region’s only Community Digital Art Gallery.

You can see thumbnail images of all the accepted artworks. I attended my first ever Artist Reception in Sioux Falls, SD :)

The show featured digital images of 77 artworks by 36 artists from South Dakota, as well as Minnesota and New York. A variety of mediums were represented in the show, including oil and acrylic paintings, oil pastel, monoprints, drawings, mixed media collage, sculpture, pottery, painted woven canvas and photography. The public was invited to stop by the Prairie Center to see the show. Hours were 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The painting I had in the show was completely digital – I used Corel Painter software to paint it. The painting was “Purple Majesty” – a small low res version is shown here.

Announcement: Purple Majesty products are available, including posters, prints and a variety of other products such as key chains and coffee mugs.

June 21, 1993 – Oil Painting Award

I entered one painting (an oil painting) in a show, The People’s Choice Art Awards in Des Moines, Iowa, and won an award: Third Place – Amateur Category – My younger brother was so impressed with my award winning painting that he convinced me to trade it for his car (gently used). I have been painting professionally since that contest.
