Choose Your Direction by Barbara Burns

When I was at Best Buy looking at tablets last week, a salesman told me that laptop & desktop sales are dropping like flies basically.

The reason quoted to me is because you can do *almost* everything on a tablet that you can do on a laptop and it has a lighter-weight footprint and easier mobility.

I can think of four reasons why I still need a laptop … external storage of my art files [CD, DVD & HD], my Corel Painter software, being able to use my scanner and being able to use my Outlook email program for my website email.

Yes I could go to Cloud only storage, they do have tablet painting apps and I could send all my website domain email to my Google email acct then I could have someone else do all my artwork scanning for me.

I am not ready to give up my computer to go tablet only … yet anyway.

I still work in traditional media … watercolor & ink on watercolor paper or other papers … to get those into the computer, I have to either scan them or photograph them. It would get really expensive really quickly if I took all my artwork somewhere to be scanned by someone else. 20 or even less scans would pay for a so-so laptop :)

I like using the email program on my computer – I can use it as the return path when I answer emails from customers … it may not be as important now as it used to be but I am still a bit old fashioned :)

I love using my Corel Painter software – I need to upgrade to the latest and greatest version for the newest bells & whistles but to my knowlwedge, they do not have an app for tablets of it yet … and I am not thinking it would be full featured like the program if they did … now when they too go to the Cloud and the full program is available for use from tablets … I may think about it more seriously.

I can get a Wacom Bamboo Splash graphic tablet to use with my desktop at a reasonable price and I know how to use it to paint with my Painter software. I have a CD/DVD burner on my desktop … and I know someone who can rebuild my desktop if it does keel over dead on me – and my daughter has a really old laptop I could use for Facebook, Twitter, Google + and my website until I could get back in business with rebuilt equipment or with a new cheap laptop.

Right now I have backups on CD, DVD and an external hard drive – nothing on the Cloud yet … without a computer, I could not access any of my art file backups.

I still want a tablet for games and reading magazines and Internet surfing … but I do not need to get one of the top of the line $500 kind that an artist would want … it is REALLY nice … but not practical for me right now.
