Across My Street

Across My Street sketch by Barbara Burns

Keep a sketchbook or loose pieces of paper laid out on an end table next to a window – keep a sketching pen or pencil there too – deliberately make time to go look out the window and quickly line sketch what you see.

Maybe only the shadows … or the curve of a snowbank the snow plow left behind … or the sparse blades of winter grass peeking thru the snow .. or lovely flowers swaying in the spring breeze.

Our yards are more interesting and changeable than we may realize … time of day as well as time of year affects what we see out that window.

Keep a small sketchbook plus pen or pencil in the car for those “waiting moments” … I sit in the car waiting for my grandson to get out of school … I have to go early if I want a place to park … so sketching in those extra 15 minutes is a way to keep seeing different things in the same scene every day.

Keep a small sketchbook in your purse or backpack or carry-all … at restaurants, pull out your sketchpad after ordering and doodle what you see while you wait for your food to arrive – I never notice how long it takes for the food to arrive – my hunger is not first in my mind while I am sketching :) … and ppl around me are interested too so many will talk to me so I can hand out business cards too!

Take five minutes here and there in your life to create some sketches of what you see – I use my watercolor pencils.

If you are a professional artist, it will help remind you that you really are an artist that needs to create your own projects and not just “earning a living”. Yes life and busy happens … way too much sometimes and many times … but being creative people … we can create ways for us to connect with ourselves even during our busiest seasons.

If you are not a professional artist, it can help you find more pleasure in your daily life .. seeing blades of grass and brick texture for example brings new depth to what is around us and helps us stop to smell the flowers, admire the bushes and notice the clouds.

Then create a collage of your favorite pieces and frame them for hanging in your living room or office … maybe it will be an abstract … but it will definitely be interesting to see how different moments can come together to make a whole art project.
