Illustration Musings
My friend Karyn Lewis is selling some of her great Clip Art illustrations … adorable! I love the kitties … and I am not even a cat person … lol … she is a very gifted illustrator. Her Red Riding Hood print would be marvelous for a little girl’s room too!
While drinking my morning coffee today, I was just thinking about drawing, sketching and painting skills. I used to believe that I could not “illustrate” because of my vision problems. Yet I sketch quite happily … and many times those sketches become paintings or … dare I say it … drawings?
My drawings are not the tightly rendered detailed pieces of technical brilliance that I associate with drawing and illustration … yet they have their own charm and beauty .. I have been told that many times by several different people … using either CorelDRAW or Adobe Illustrator, I can recreate most any thing in the corporate world for graphic design projects. I use Corel Painter to paint as if I were using oil paints now that using large oil paint brushes is so painful and difficult for me.
I still do not … draw … per se … I will never … draw … like most other artists who do real drawing and portrait likenesses … my vision will not allow me to create photo realistic illustrations or portraits from “drawing” (I am not even sure if I would want to do any of those in actuality – I just know I cannot lol so that makes it much more attractive sounding to me) … I have no depth perception … I guess … I can be miles off in my guessing or spit-spot nearly right there … maybe that is why I fit more into … surrealism??? … abstract??? … with ppl … caricature probably is not something I could do either … though I cannot say that I have any desire to do those … but perhaps I can create my own … fantasy … aliens … though they tell me that all those should be based on .. ppl / animal anatomy … to be “believe-able”.
I know that I am much more comfortable doing my form of “drawing” on the computer using my Wacom Cintiq for fantasy creatures while I love using my watercolor pencils on traditional watercolor papers for creating my adorable whimsical palm trees!
