RPG Nostalgia & Role Playing Games Today

I used to play D&D … paper & pencil and painted miniature figures so many years ago in Iowa … I don’t know anyone in Texas that plays or I would probably volunteer to play .. but being someone’s Grandma .. well … I am not going looking for young kids to play role playing games with … it just doesn’t seem decorous to do that … LOL … I have a Playstation 2 and a PSP … (I got rid of the Nintendo stuff – see my rant about them here – Buyer Beware – if you’re interested in why – and I had enough in credit from all that used stuff to buy a brand new PSP and one game plus a year’s warranty … I was amazed that I had that much stuff … but I LOVE the PSP! and I have not even tried to use it online or upgraded the … whatever firmware it is that is supposed to be upgraded) … I used to play lots of Might & Magic on the computer … but now, I need to buy a new computer just for gaming … the Willy Wally World special the kids got me two years ago just is not up for today’s gaming … I have a list of games I want to buy and try though once I get a gaming computer!

I have never played any of the Myst games … I always kept putting it off to buy one and play it – mostly I think because I do not have a lot of time to devote to gaming with all the commute time … so I tend to get games that I can play in pieces and not forget what is happening too much of between times … sometimes it will be several weeks before I get back to a game I have in progress. They are now up to Myst III: Exile – it looks good and sounds fun … when the first Myst came out, ppl I knew were really excited and many loved it while others didn’t. I liked the package blurb … it sounded like it would be a wonderful game and I heard great things about the storyline. If I manage to get a gaming computer by Christmas, this game is on my Wish List for Santa.

I bought Everquest but never played it … I did install it on the computer … but never pursued playing it. Why? It sounds like exactly the kind of game that I would dearly love to play and could spend hours doing just that. Well … that is the reason right there I never pursued playing it … I do not want to spend hours playing a game online and never get anything else done – no painting, no playing with the puppy, no time for my grandson, … absolutely no way :D .

I’ve met people who have lost their jobs and their marriages from playing Everquest … it seems just a tad … over the edge … to me to get that involved in a game that you are willing to lose your entire life to play it. If you can be sensible about playing it … sounds awesome … but I’ve also heard that you need to have friends who play it to actually really advance and be able to play well … again, I am someone’s Grandma and I have no school friends to join in an online game. And my grandson is not quite old enough for him to play them yet.

This game sounds fun … Disciples II: Rise Of The Elves … and like one I would like so it too is going on my Christmas Wish List for when I get a gaming computer. I love ELves!

My son loves Role Playing Games too … I think he would love Strategic Command – European Theater … and probably also Strategic Command 2 Blitzkrieg … his dad, uncles and cousins in Iowa play a lot of these games … they play together as a family so many of the games they play are still pencils and paper (and probably the Risk board game too!) though I imagine they all play online too and individually on their own computers. They do NOT have horrendous commute times in traffic like I do to eat away their evenings.
