Tuesdays Topic – Make Today Better Than Yesterday – Cookies
on July 31st, 2007 at 8:05 pmWhat a great topic
… I chose cookies! Are you asking yourself why I would choose cookies as the subject to make today better than yesterday?
My grandmother raised me – she was famous in our family for making chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren – as a kid, I used to watch her make oatmeal cookies, gingerbread cookies, molasses cookies, sugar cookies and peanut butter cookies as well as chocolate chip cookies (and several other cookie flavors too – lemon bars or ginger snap bars for example). I got to lick the bowl just like if she were making a cake – cookie dough is one of my favorite treats in the world! I can eat an entire batch (usually not all at one time thankfully – maybe 3 or 4 different times for a small batch of cookie dough) … in my ancient old age … rofl … of being a really tired commuter – if I want to eat cookie dough – I usually just buy a roll of it at the store. Those rolls … the cookie dough is much better uncooked in my opinion than when it is baked into cookies – if you eat them while hot, they are okay – not awesome or terrific but okay …. cooled off or worse yet, cold – they are icky tasting!
Yesterday was Monday … today is Tuesday – we still have 3 more work days of this week before next week-end. I’m not eating cookie dough or making cookies and I have no store bought cookies in the house right now either – I usually do not eat many of those either unless they are Oreo cookies or Chips Ahoy … but I am dreaming of milk & home made fresh from the oven cookies and all the comfort of childhood memories of carefree moments spent blissfully licking cookie dough off a spoon or spatula or stuffing hot melt-in-your-mouth cookies in my mouth to burn my tongue with the melting sugary cookies that weren’t crunchy yet – her hot cookies were never crunchy from the oven – they were soft and scrumptious … when cooled … then they were crunchy (and ready to dip in a glass of milk if you like to dip your cookies into milk to be soggy cookies). I like fresh, crunchy home-made cookies … I just do not have much time or energy for making cookies … and too many cookies are not good for us anyway – we need to eat more fruits & vegetables than cookies.
When my kids were little and we watched Sesame Street – my very favorite Muppet was … you guessed it – Cookie Monster! I loved his cookie attitude,
his blue fur, his googly looking eyes, his voice and how he would make a pig of himself stuffing cookies in his mouth – reminded me of how toddlers eat cookies! No I did not encourage my kids to eat cookies like Cookie Monster but I enjoyed him on the show very much.
Years ago, in Iowa, I had a friend who collected cookie jars – she had an entire wall of shelves in her dining room from floor to ceiling filled with cookie jars – she had cookie jars on top of her cupboards, she had cookie jars on shelves in most of her windows and she had cookie jars in a hutch too as well as on all her kitchen counters. I remember one in particular – it was cut glass and when the sun would shine on it, it made rainbows all over the room – she never had cookies in her house – just cookie jars. She liked to keep odds & ends of this n that in her cookie jars – she had embroidery thread in one next to her chair where she did embroidery … another had band-aids in it – another had cotton balls … and yet another had q-tips …. I have no idea how she remembered what was in which cookie jar since most were not see through and because she had so many of them … but she seemed to know exactly what was in each of those cookie jars. The cut glass one is the only one I remember as being empty – it was on her dining room table to make rainbows. Those rainbows made my day brighter, happier and better every time I saw them – and it is a lovely memory after a long day at work with a hot miserable drive home – I know, rolling up the windows and turning the A/C on would make the ride home better except that it uses so much more gas to run the A/C which would make it a worse day than being in the heat.
